Volunteer roles

Six ways to make a difference

From sharing your lived experience to staffing a stall at an awareness day, find the role that fits your skills, time, and interests.

💜

Peer Support Mentor

Share your lived experience with newly diagnosed whānau. We pair you with a buddy, train you in active listening, and check in regularly. Ideal if you're living with thalassaemia, sickle cell, or another long-term condition.

🎪

Event Volunteer

Help run our awareness drives, family days, and blood donation events. Set up, greet attendees, share information, take photos. Perfect for weekend volunteers and students seeking experience.

📢

Awareness Champion

Represent Muskaan in your community, workplace, or school. Share our message, distribute resources, and host conversation circles. A great way to volunteer remotely or in your own time.

🌐

Cultural Liaison / Translator

Help us reach Aotearoa's diverse communities. Translate resources, interpret at appointments, or co-design culturally safe materials in Hindi, Urdu, Samoan, Mandarin, te reo Māori, and more.

📊

Office & Admin Support

Behind-the-scenes work that keeps us running, communications, social media, data entry, grant writing, volunteer coordination. Perfect for remote volunteers and skilled professionals.

🎉

Fundraising & Events

Help us raise the funds that keep our programmes free. From planning galas to running community sausage sizzles, bring your creativity and enthusiasm.

Voices from our volunteers

Why they keep coming back

"
"I started volunteering at a single blood donor drive, I'm still here three years later. The community at Muskaan is unlike anywhere else I've worked."
Aroha T. Event Volunteer · Auckland
"
"As a peer mentor, I get to be the person I wished I'd had when my daughter was diagnosed. It's healing for me as much as it helps the families I support."
Sara M. Peer Support Mentor · Wellington
"
"I translate resources into Hindi and Urdu in my spare time. Two hours a week, and I know I'm making it easier for whānau to understand their own care."
Rajesh K. Cultural Liaison · Hamilton

Frequently asked

Volunteer questions, answered

How much time do I need to commit?

It's up to you. Some volunteers give 1–2 hours a week; others come along for one-off events. We work around your schedule, flexibility is key.

Do I need special skills or experience?

For most roles, no. We provide training, a buddy, and ongoing support. Lived experience, language skills, or professional expertise are bonuses, but enthusiasm and reliability matter most.

Will I get training?

Yes, every volunteer goes through role-specific induction. Peer mentors and clinical volunteers get more in-depth training. All training is free.

Can I volunteer remotely?

Absolutely. Translation, awareness campaigns, social media support, and admin work can all be done from anywhere in Aotearoa.

Is there an age limit?

Most roles are open to anyone 16+. For event volunteering with parental consent, we welcome younger volunteers from 14. Some roles (peer support, working with tamariki) require you to be 18+.

Can I claim expenses?

Yes. We reimburse travel (mileage or public transport), parking, and any pre-approved costs incurred while volunteering. Submit receipts monthly.

Can my employer count this as community service?

Yes, many of our volunteers come through corporate community days. We provide attendance letters and impact reports for your employer.

Do I get a reference for future jobs or study?

After three months of regular volunteering, we're happy to provide written references and verify hours for university applications, scholarships, and job interviews.
